Fever Dream of a Guilt-Ridden Gadget Reporter →
There is a hole in my heart dug deep by advertising and envy and a desire to see a thing that is new and different and beautiful. A place within me that is empty, and that I want to fill it up. The hole makes me think electronics can help. And of course, they can. They make the world easier and more enjoyable. They boost productivity and provide entertainment and information and sometimes even...

This American Life - Mr. Daisey and the Apple... →
In my opinion one of the best episodes of This American Life in a long time. Which I listened to at work on my iPod, with an iPhone in my pocket, while checking email on an iPad and working on a handful of (HP) laptops. I like how they note at the end that this episode (like all other episodes of TAL) was produced using Apple computers. Regardless of what the economists say, I worry about...

Where did the comments go, part 2 →
We didn’t expect this: All comments on stories made before 10:45 p.m. Monday disappeared from our site. The reason? You can only have Facebook’s commenting tool linked to one domain name, i.e., utsandiego.com vs. signonsandiego.com. Embarrassing. Makes you wonder what other changes at the new U-T San Diego are rushed and poorly researched.

As a follow up to this post, I’m (slightly) ashamed to admit that I’m pretty sure this is my first ever Bluetooth device.

Toasting California Distilleries →
I understand that The California Report is a syndicated show out of the Bay Area, but it’s a little disappointing to hear KPBS teasing, and then playing this story about California distilleries with no mention of San Diego’s own Ballast Point Distillery.

David Carr: The News Diet Of A Media Omnivore →
When I wake up in the morning and the gun goes off, I’m checking Twitter. I’m checking RSS feeds, and I get four newspapers at my house every day. I get the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, the Star Ledger - because I live in New Jersey - and, of course, the New York Times. And the reason I do is because the day before this, all this stuff has gone whizzing past me, and I...

Bacteria 1, F.D.A. 0 - NYTimes.com →
Here’s the nut: The F.D.A. has no money to spare, but the corporations that control the food industry have all they need, along with the political power it buys. That’s why we can say this without equivocation: public health, the quality of our food, and animal welfare are all sacrificed to the profits that can be made by raising animals in factories. Plying “healthy” farm animals (the...

News Desk: Central Booking : The New Yorker →
What does it all add up to? I went out into the street and got arrested because I was angry that the cops had tackled our drummer; irritated that most of the Wall Street types walking by could be so contemptuous of people who were more committed, more engaged, more interested in the future of this country than they are; and because I was curious—about what the process of arrest was like, what...

One of my greatest beer experiences of 2011.
beersentence: Returning to Sweden and my mother’s house - only to find that Polish construction workers have consumed my entire collection of Westvleteren 12 vintages. /V Ouch. Seriously ouch. (Westvleteren 12 is considered by many to be one of the best beers in the world)

Universal Says It Can’t Be Sued for Bogus... →
Megaupload sued Universal Music on Monday, saying that the record label had no right to take the video down, since the file-sharing service had signed contracts from the performers, including Black Eyed Peas front man will.i.am. The suit sought an injunction and unspecified damages, saying the label had violated a provision in copyright law that forbids bogus copyright claims. Universal admits...

Really enjoyed Dan Kennedy’s story The Edge on this episode of Risk! It’s the last story, but they’re all worthy of a listen.

How American Food Got So Bad →
Compared to a lot of Asian cultures, or European cultures, when it comes to the food scene, very often in America the child is in charge, and that again means soft, and sweet, and gooey.
